اَلْحَمْدُ
لِلّهِ بِجَمِیعِ مَحَامِدِه کُلِّهَا عَلَی جَمِیعِ نِعَمِهِ کُلِّهَا…
اَلْحَمْدُ لِلّهِ مالِکِ الْمُلْکِ مُجْرِی الْفُلْکِ مُسَخِّرِ الرِّیاحِ فالِقِ
الاْصْباحِ دَیّانِ الدّینِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمینَ اَلْحَمْدُ لِلّهِ عَلی حِلْمِهِ
بَعْدَ عِلمِهِ وَالْحَمْدُ لِلّهِ عَلی عَفْوِهِ بَعْدَ قُدْرَتِهِ وَالْحَمْدُ
لِلّهِ عَلی طُولِ اَناتِهِ فی غَضَبِهِ وَهُوَ قادِرٌ عَلی ما یُریدُ
ثم الصلاه و السلام علی محمد عبده و رسوله ارسله بالهدی و
دین الحق لیظهره علی الدین کله و لو کره المشرکون
اوصیکم
عبادالله و نفسی بتقوی الله و اتباع امره و نهیه، و اخوفکم من عقابه
Twentieth
Virtue: Intellectual Tolerance
وَ أَمَّا النَّهَارَ فَحُلَمَاءُ
عُلَمَاءُ، أَبْرَارٌ أَتْقِیَاءُ
By day, they are
tolerant scientisits and charitable philanthropists.
The
importance of patience and tolerance
Patience means to
refrain from arousing anger and violence. About importance of tolerance and
patience, Amir al-Mu minin says:
إنْ لَمْ تَکُنْ حَلیمَاً فَتَحَلَّمْ
فَإِنَّهُ قَلَّ مَنْ تَشَبَّهَ بِقَومٍ إِلاّ أَوشَکَ أَنْ یَکُونَ مِنْهُم نهج
البلاغه، حکمت 207
If you cannot
forbear, feign to do so because it is seldom that a man likens himself to a
group and does not become as one of them.
And Imam Sadeq
PBUH has also narrated the importance of patience and tolerance:
مَا مِنْ جُرْعَةٍ یَتَجَرَّعُهَا
العَبْدُ أحَبُّ إلَی اللّهِ مِنْ جُرْعَةِ غَیْظٍ یَتَجَرَّعُهَا عِنْدَ
تَرَدُّدِهَا فِی قَلْبِهِ إمّا بِصَبْرٍ وَ إمَّا بِحِلْمٍ کافی، ج2، ص111
No sip is more
pleasing to God than the anger that a person drinks in his heart because of
patience or restraint.
الْمُؤمِنُ
خَلَطَ عَمَلُهُ بِالْحِلْمِ کافی، ج2، ص111
A believer is patience in his behavior.
Halim is a divine attribute of god, and God
has referred to it in numerous verses, such as:
قَوْلٌ مَعْرُوفٌ وَمَغْفِرَةٌ خَيْرٌ مِنْ صَدَقَةٍ يَتْبَعُهَا أَذًى
وَاللَّهُ غَنِيٌّ حَلِيمٌ ﴿بقره:۲۶۳﴾
Kind words and forgiveness are
better than charity followed by insults. God is Rich and Clement.
Patience and helm have a very close meaning to
each other. Human life in the world is beset by
strange problems that if he stands up to them with patience and resistance, he
will surely win; and if he does not stand up to them, he will never reach he’s
destination. Helm and patience is endurance of
various problems and incidents, the opposite being is Impatience and begging,
which means losing resistance and giving in to problems.
Almost a hundred verses in the Holy Qur an
speak of patience, while none of the human virtues have been so emphasized.
This shows that the Qur an places a high value on patience and a great reward for the patient, and saying:
قُلْ يَا عِبَادِ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اتَّقُوا رَبَّكُمْ لِلَّذِينَ
أَحْسَنُوا فِي هَذِهِ الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةٌ وَأَرْضُ اللَّهِ وَاسِعَةٌ إِنَّمَا
يُوَفَّى الصَّابِرُونَ أَجْرَهُمْ بِغَيْرِ حِسَابٍ ﴿زمر:۱۰﴾
Say, “O My devotees who have
believed, keep your duty to your Lord. For those who do good in this world, is
goodness. And God’s earth is vast. The steadfast will be paid their wages in
full, without reckoning.”
The key for entering Paradise is patience;
when holly Quran says that angels come to the doors of paradise to welcome the
patient people
سَلامٌ عَلَیکمْ بِما صَبَرْتُمْ فَنِعْمَ عُقْبَی الدَّارِ رعد:24
“Peace be upon you, because
you endured patiently. How excellent is the Final Home.”
And he asked
the believers to wait and invite each other to do so:
يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اصْبِرُوا وَصَابِرُوا وَرَابِطُوا
وَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ ﴿آل عمران:۲۰۰﴾
O you who believe! Be patient, and
advocate patience, and be united, and revere God, so that you may thrive.
And to ask
for help from patience:
يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اسْتَعِينُوا بِالصَّبْرِ وَالصَّلَاةِ
إِنَّ اللَّهَ مَعَ الصَّابِرِينَ بقره:153
O you who believe! Seek help
through patience and prayers. God is with the steadfast.
And patience
is known for things that cause no harm in life:
إِنَّ الْإِنْسَانَ لَفِي خُسْرٍ؛ إِلَّا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا
الصَّالِحَاتِ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالْحَقِّ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالصَّبْرِ﴿عصر:۲-3﴾
The human being is in loss. Except those who believe, and do good works, and
encourage truth, and recommend patience.
Without
patience and endurance, man is unable to stand in the positive direction and
cannot stand against the negative factors, disasters and pests. For this
reason, the key to victory is patience.
Helm patience beside
science
Amir
al-Mu minin as considers patience to be one of the attributes of the real scientist
and says:
یا
طالب العلم ان للعالم ثلاث علامات: العلم، والحلم، والصمت؛ و للمتکلف ثلاث علامات:
ینازع من فوقه بالمعصیة، ویظلم من دونه بالغلبة، ویظاهر الظلمة کافی، ج 1، ص37
O science seeker! There are three signs for
the scientist: science, patience, and silence, and for who that try’s to show that
his a scientist there are also three signs: to fight disobedience to his
superior, to oppress his subordinates, and to support the transgressors.
The scientist man is calm and confronted with
insult, mischief and violence, because insult and mischief only come from
ignorant people and as the Qur an says:
وَعِبَادُ الرَّحْمَنِ الَّذِينَ يَمْشُونَ عَلَى الْأَرْضِ هَوْنًا وَإِذَا
خَاطَبَهُمُ الْجَاهِلُونَ قَالُوا سَلَامًا ﴿فرقان:۶۳﴾
The servants of the Merciful are
those who walk the earth in humility, and when the ignorant address them, they
say, “Peace.”
Imam Sadiq
peace be upon him says:
منه العلم ولاتکونوا علماء جبارین فیذهب باطلکم
بحقکم بحارالانوار، ج 2، ص 41
Seek wisdom
with humility and patience and be modest and humble
towards your disciples and teachers, and do not be like the oppressive
scholars, so that your bad deeds will destroy your good deeds.
