بسم الله الرحمن الرحیم

اَلْحَمْدُ لِلّهِ بِجَمِیعِ مَحَامِدِه کُلِّهَا عَلَی جَمِیعِ نِعَمِهِ کُلِّهَا… اَلْحَمْدُ لِلّهِ مالِکِ الْمُلْکِ مُجْرِی الْفُلْکِ مُسَخِّرِ الرِّیاحِ فالِقِ الاْصْباحِ دَیّانِ الدّینِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمینَ اَلْحَمْدُ لِلّهِ عَلی حِلْمِهِ بَعْدَ عِلمِهِ وَالْحَمْدُ لِلّهِ عَلی عَفْوِهِ بَعْدَ قُدْرَتِهِ وَالْحَمْدُ لِلّهِ عَلی طُولِ اَناتِهِ فی غَضَبِهِ وَهُوَ قادِرٌ عَلی ما یُریدُ

ثم الصلاه و السلام علی محمد عبده و رسوله ارسله بالهدی و دین الحق لیظهره علی الدین کله و لو کره المشرکون

اوصیکم عبادالله و نفسی بتقوی الله و اتباع امره و نهیه، و اخوفکم من عقابه

The fifth sign of the righteous:  

وَ عِلْماً فِی حِلْم

And awareness while being patient.

The twentieth virtue formerly mentioned by the Amir al-Mu’minin for the pious was that ” وَ أَمَّا النَّهَارَ فَحُلَمَاءُ عُلَمَاءُ , believers are tolerant in the daytime.” At that point, he mentioned the wisdom tolerant and the faithful tolerance as a  virtue of pious, and here he expresses the obvious signs of the pious  science in the law and knowledge of tolerance. Believers are not only people of science but also greedy in the pursuit of knowledge and scientific advancement, but this greed and interest in science does not make them less tolerant.

Scientists are usually bored of the words of a illiterate person. After a short time when they hear words that are worthless and scientifically flawed, they become aggressive and make such a people to stay away from them. It is very difficult for the scholars to tolerate lowly literacy, but with all the knowledge they have and their zeal for science, it is obvious that they are patient and tolerant.

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) states in the expression of the value of tolerance by a scholar who is in contact with a illiterate:

ثَلاثٌ مِنْ مَكارِمِ الاَخْلاقِ فِى الدُّنْيا وَالآخِرَةِ: اَنْ تَعْفُوَ عَمَّنْ ظَلَمَكَ، وَتَصِلَ مَنْ قَطَعَكَ، وَ تَحْلُمَ عَمَّنْ جَهِلَ عَلَيْكَ (نهج الفصاحه، ح ۱۲۸۸)

There are three things in the world and in the hereafter of ethics: forgive the one  who oppresses you, make contact with the has broken contact with you, and tolerance with a one who’s ignorant.

And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) considers the value of compassion and forbearance as prophets, and the wise and patient man in the value of action with the prophets:

كادَ الْحَليمُ أَنْ يَكونَ نَبيّاً ( بحارالأنوار، ج۴۳،ص۷۰)

A patient person is close to a prophet.

Halim is a divine attribute, and God has referred to it in numerous verses, such as:

قَوْلٌ مَعْرُوفٌ وَمَغْفِرَةٌ خَيْرٌ مِنْ صَدَقَةٍ يَتْبَعُهَا أَذًى وَاللَّهُ غَنِيٌّ حَلِيمٌ ﴿بقره:۲۶۳

Kind words and forgiveness are better than charity followed by insults. God is Rich and Clement.

Amir al-Mu’minin considers patience to be one of the attributes of the true scientist:

    یا طالب العلم ان للعالم ثلاث علامات: العلم، والحلم، والصمت؛

وللمتکلف ثلاث علامات: ینازع من فوقه بالمعصیة، ویظلم من دونه بالغلبة، ویظاهر الظلمة (کافی، ج 1، ص37)

O science seeker! There are three signs for the scientist: science, patience, and silence, and for the people who try to be seen as a scientist three signs: to fight disobedience to his superior, to oppress his subordinate by subjugation, and to support the transgressors.

The scientist man is calm and dignified in the face of insults, mischief, and violence of others, because insults and mischief only come from ignorant people and, as the Qur’an says:

وَعِبَادُ الرَّحْمَنِ الَّذِينَ يَمْشُونَ عَلَى الْأَرْضِ هَوْنًا وَإِذَا خَاطَبَهُمُ الْجَاهِلُونَ قَالُوا سَلَامًا ﴿فرقان:۶۳﴾

The servants of the Merciful are those who walk the earth in humility, and when the ignorant address them, they say, “Peace.”

Patience is a sign of science.

Imam Sadegh (Peace be upon him ) says:

    اطلبوا العلم وتزینوا معه بالحلم والوقار وتواضعوا لمن تعلمونه العلم وتواضعوا لمن طلبتم منه العلم ولاتکونوا علماء جبارین فیذهب باطلکم بحقکم )بحارالانوار، ج 2، ص 41 )

Be patient and dignified in the pursuit of knowledge, and be modest and humble toward your students and professors, and do not be like the oppressor scientists, so that your bad deeds will destroy your good deeds.

Anger at the debate is a sign of disrespect. This scientist’s tolerance for the ignorance of the ignorant is not confined to religious knowledge. A doctor must be patient and answer the ignorant questions and words of others, or an engineer, or an artist, or anyone who has any knowledge or experience in any field against those who do not have that experience and they should not be angry against these kind of actions.

One of the most important examples of the tolerance of the scholars against the ignorant comment is realized in the family. When a young boy or girl comments on something that he or she  is not good at it and didn’t  experienced it, his or her parents who are knowledgeable and experienced should not be angry with the ignorant arguments, but should Patiently transfer their knowledge and experience to him or her. The same thing happens with a couple or two Colleagues.
